Shifting home within your city? You can book packers and movers, or you can pack yourself and hire local workers with a tempo. The second option is often cheaper for a small move, but it isn't always the better choice.

This guide compares the cost of both options for a 1BHK and 2BHK, lists the extra charges to check and shows when each one makes sense.

Packers and movers charges for local shifting

Published prices vary widely, so treat these as a starting point and get your own quotes:

₹6,000–8,000

₹5,000–9,000

2BHK

₹8,000–12,000

₹8,000–15,000

3BHK

₹9,800–13,200

₹12,000–16,000

₹13,000–24,000

Approximate prices published by moving companies in 2026: NoBroker, StowNest and Speed Move. Your quote depends on your distance, belongings, floor and the services you choose.

Extra charges to check

The first price you hear may not be the final one. Ask about these before you agree:

  • GST: ask whether it's included. Speed Move lists 18%.

  • Transit insurance: Speed Move lists 3% of declared value. Check what it covers.

  • Stairs: Speed Move lists ₹500–1,500 per floor when there's no lift above the 3rd floor.

  • Timing: Speed Move says weekend and month-end moves cost 10–15% more.

  • Furniture: ask whether dismantling and reassembly are included.

  • Heavy items: large or fragile items may cost extra.

These figures come from one company, so others may charge differently. Ask for a written, itemised quote.

What it costs with local workers and a tempo

With this option, you pack your things, book a tempo and hire workers only for loading and unloading. Here's an example using the estimated general labour rates of ₹500–737 a day:

Home

Example team

Estimated labour cost

1BHK

2 workers for half a day

₹500–737

2BHK

3 workers for a full day

₹1,500–2,211

Then add these costs:

  • Tempo: Porter's Tata Ace in Mumbai starts from ₹236 and carries up to 750 kg. Your fare depends on distance, and a bigger home may need more than one trip, so check the price for your route.

  • Packing: boxes, tape and bubble wrap.

  • Extras: stairs, heavy items or a minimum charge from the workers.

The team sizes above are only an example. Your home may need more or fewer people, so share the details and agree the price first.

Packers and movers vs local workers

The main difference is how much of the work and risk you take on yourself.

Comparison of packers and movers with local workers and a tempo for shifting home, including who does the work and who carries the risk

Choose local workers and a tempo if:

  • You're moving within the same city

  • You don't have much heavy furniture

  • You have time to pack yourself

  • You're happy to manage the move on the day

Choose packers and movers if:

  • You're moving to another city

  • You have expensive, fragile or very heavy items

  • You don't have time to pack

  • You want one company to handle the move and offer insurance

How to shift home with local workers

  1. Pack early. Label boxes by room and keep valuables and documents with you.

  2. List the heavy items. Note beds, fridges, washing machines and anything that needs dismantling.

  3. Book the tempo. Check the vehicle size and whether you'll need more than one trip.

  4. Find workers. Share the date, floors, lift access and rough number of items.

  5. Agree the price. Include loading, unloading and how long it should take.

  6. Protect your things. Wrap fragile items and take photos of expensive ones before the move.

  7. Pay when the work is done. Check your belongings first, and pay as agreed.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to shift a 1BHK?

Published mover prices for a local 1BHK move range from about ₹3,200 to ₹9,000. With local workers, labour alone may be about ₹500–737 in our example, plus the tempo and packing.

What does it cost to shift a 2BHK?

Published mover prices range from about ₹6,400 to ₹15,000. In our example, labour with local workers is about ₹1,500–2,211, plus the tempo and packing.

Can I hire only labour for house shifting?

Yes. You can hire workers just for loading and unloading, and arrange the tempo and packing yourself.

How many workers do I need?

It depends on your belongings, floors and lift access. Two workers may be enough for a small 1BHK, and a larger home usually needs more. Share the details and ask the worker what they suggest.

Are packers and movers charges based on distance?

Distance is one factor. The amount you're moving, your floor, lift access, packing and insurance can also change the price.

Who pays if something gets damaged?

Check the mover's insurance terms before you book. With individual workers, there may be no insurance, so agree this before work starts and pack valuable items carefully.
